Mainland China lottery sales grew

Official lottery sales in mainland China rose 7.9% from the previous year to 40.69 billion yuan ($6.13 billion) in May, according to the latest data from China's finance ministry. That slowed from a 9% increase in official lottery sales reached in April.

Welfare lottery sales rose 7.3% year-on-year to 19.56 billion yuan in May, while sports lottery sales rose 8.6% to about 211.33 billion yuan, official data showed.

Total sales of lottery products in the first five months of 2018 rose 9.0% year-on-year to about 186.57 billion yuan. In the five months to May 31, welfare lottery sales totaled 91.51 billion yuan, up 3.7% year-on-year, and sports lottery sales rose 14.7% year-on-year to 950.06 billion yuan.

Lottery sales rose in May in 27 of mainland China's 31 provinces and cities.

Guangdong continues to be the leading lottery market in mainland China. Combined sales of welfare and sports lottery tickets reached nearly 18.16 billion yuan in the January-May period, up 8.9% from a year earlier.

Guangdong followed, with Jiangsu seeing total lottery sales in the first five months of the year of about 15.25 billion yuan, up 13.3% year-on-year. China's eastern province of Shandong came in third with ticket sales of about 13.94 billion yuan, up 0.3% year-on-year, according to official data.
